Santorini Island (1 day)
In Greece, we have thousands of islands, and each has a different story to tell, but this island is the one to be in all the stories. This is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. This island is small but still so big. It carries so much history and mystery around it, and that’s why so many people in the world are curious to come and see this island and experience the magical romance of Santorini Island!
Many centuries ago, a volcanic eruption created one of the enormous volcanic craters in the world. It is now called Kaldera. Because of this eruption, this island was split into several parts, the biggest Thira – Santorini. The kids, rocks, and beaches show all kinds of colors, and that’s because of this volcanic activity years ago. There is a black beach on the island and a red coast. The port is the best place to see this different kind of soil.
The magnificent nature complements the exciting architecture and design on the island. Blue and white are the national colors. People say that the inhabitants of Santorini during the occupations made all the houses white with blue domes to admire their freedom and nation secretly. Now that Greece is independent, it just makes a fabulous view to admire.
Program
This tour starts quite early as you need to travel to another island; the pick-up is around 07:00. First, you go to the port of Heraklion, where the ferry to Santorini is docked and ready to depart. The trip to Santorini Island takes approximately 2 hours. When you arrive on the island, your tour bus with your guide welcomes you and is ready to go for a beautiful tour.
As you start the drive up the mountain, prepare yourself for a fabulous view of the Kaldera. The bus rides on the island are not long as the island is small. The first stop will be the village of Oia. This village is small but stunning as it’s built on lies, here you will have time to walk around and explore the town while enjoying the picturesque view. You can even visit a small Venetia castle. After your great time in this village, your bus will take you to the administrative center of this island that is the city of Fira.
Fira is the capital of this island, with so many shops, restaurants, hotels, and of course people. Also, here you have free time to explore the place, take photos, maybe have some lunch, and do some physical activities to visit the old port of Fira. It is more than 500 steps to the port. Perhaps you will meet some celebrities here, as Santorini is also a popular place for stars to come for some private holidays in the cliff hotels with a personal view of the Kaldera.
Don’t forget to try some local specialties like Tomatokeftedes – tomato balls, a delicious vegetarian meal, and the local vine Nihteri and Vin Santo when you are here.
After the beautiful time on the island, your bus will bring you back to the port, and the ferry will take you back to Crete! In the port of Heraklion, the transfer bus will get you back to your hotel, and you will return after 19:00
