Golden Island

Have You ever seen something so beautiful that You are out of breath and words? If not, this island allows You to experience that kind of emotion. Fifty shades of blue and 50 shades of gold are the way to describe a place just 12 km from the coast of Crete.

The south side of the island of Crete once again is entirely different from the rest of the island. Here it rains less, temperatures get higher, and nature is more Africa-like as it’s just 300 kilometers to Africa. Still, thanks to this different nature, this magnificent place close to Crete is an island, just 5 km long and relatively flat – the highest point is just 31m, and this place is called Chrissi island or, translating from Greek, Golden Island. The island got this name is it is covered with only golden sand.

The island is not inhabited; there are no buildings, no infrastructure, and sometimes no signal, so make sure to have enough snacks and drinks with You, but that’s why this place is so precious. The most famous spot on this island is the golden beach of ofcorse – golden sand, shallow water, and all kinds of turquoise colors in the water, every visitor falls in love with this place, and some even stay here longer maybe you are lucky. You meet some of the hippies that visit and protect this island.

This is undoubtedly one of the unique places on Crete; tourists mark this place as a must-see when coming to Crete, but local people and people from all over Greece love this place and come here to spend a wonderful day on the beach. And imagine, just some 60 years ago, the only visitors on this island were donkeys, but now it’s us – tourists!
